Destination story

The Muarojambi Cultural Heritage Area on the banks of the Batanghari River is one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in Southeast Asia, with remains linked to the Ancient Malay Kingdom and Srivijaya (roughly the 7th to 13th centuries). Red-brick buildings stand among large trees and ancient moats.

Unlike temples in Java, this complex is spread over a large area, so it is best explored by bicycle, which can be rented on site. Temples often visited include Gumpung, Tinggi, Kedaton, and Kembar Batu.

The area is also a venue for Vesak celebrations. Arriving in the morning or late afternoon makes the atmosphere shadier for leisurely walks and photography.

Why visitTraces of Sumatra's Buddhist civilisation from the Srivijaya era in an ancient brick forest that rarely gets crowded.
