Gudeg
Young jackfruit slow-cooked in coconut milk and palm sugar until brown and sweet, served with chicken, egg, and krecek.
Two Grand Temples and a Mountain That Still Breathes
Borobudur, a Buddhist temple from the Sailendra Dynasty in the 9th century, and Prambanan, a Hindu temple complex also built in the 9th century, were both designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1991. Both stand not far from Yogyakarta and bear witness to the art and beliefs of ancient Java.
Borobudur is designed in tiers, with reliefs that tell Buddhist teachings and everyday life, and perforated stupas at the top. At dawn, from hills such as Punthuk Setumbu, the temple seems to float in the mist with Mount Merapi and Merbabu as a backdrop.
In contrast to the serene temples, Merapi is an active volcano. Following old lava flow paths by jeep helps us understand the power of nature and how villagers on its slopes live alongside the mountain. In the evening, Yogyakarta offers gudeg and the atmosphere of palace culture.
In Yogyakarta, try Gudeg, Sate Klathak and Bakpia Pathok. Food from other regions

Goat satay skewered on iron rods and seasoned only with salt, then grilled. The rods help distribute heat evenly so the meat cooks through.
